The Philosophy behind Sacred Heart Tutorials

Parents are the primary educators of their children (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2223).  The vocation of humanity is to show forth the image of God and to be transformed into the image of the Father’s only Son (CCC, 1877). Sacred Heart believes that for some families the best way to embrace these two teachings is to educate their children at home.

Sacred Heart will assist families who educate their children at home by providing a family-friendly atmosphere where students can come together to learn core academic courses.  Sacred Heart  believes that our Catholic Faith is central to all we learn, and all of its tutors provide only material which is in agreement with the tenets of the Faith.

Sacred Heart is not a school. We are a tool—a homeschooling resource. Our tutors are not, for the most part, professional teachers. They are home schooling mothers who are interested in sharing the responsibilities of home-schooling. We are a cooperative following a classical curriculum. This means that we cooperate in the education of our students. Parents are the primary educators of their children.  In sending our children to Sacred Heart, as parents we agree to equip our children with certain “tools” to ensure not only their success but also to foster the overall spirit of the cooperative. These tools include home instruction and accountability, books and resources, and proper uniforms.

Because Sacred Heart is not a school, but a cooperative, parents agree to cooperate with tutors to ensure their students are learning, understanding, and completing assignments on time. Parents are required to continue schooling their students at home. At Sacred Heart, tutors are required to complete and distribute classroom assignment sheets for each class. This invaluable tool helps to link tutors and parents on a daily basis.  By following the assignment sheets, parents know what was taught in class and what is required to be taught and completed at home.

Because we are not a school and meet only two days a week, if students do not receive teaching and instruction in their classes at home, they cannot possibly be expected to succeed. In addition to teaching at home, parents are required to make sure that students are understanding the material and completing the homework on time. Although older students may require less support, parents are still required to make sure their students are not only understanding the material, but also completing all assignments on time. This cooperation between student, parent, and tutor is an absolute requirement.
